WADHURSTOVERVIEW

Wadhurst: The Middle School, Years 7 and 8

Wadhurst is Melbourne Grammar's purpose built learning community for boys in Years 7 and 8. We specialise in educating 11 to 14 year olds and in smoothing the transition from childhood to adolescence.

We have excellent curricular and co-curricular programs designed for students who are dealing with a time of exceptional physical, social and emotional growth. About 340 day boys and boarders are enrolled here.

Wadhurst is on our South Yarra campus opposite the Royal Botanic Gardens. Although it shares the site with the Senior School it is quite distinct in both environment and administration. Experienced male and female teaching and administration staff have a deep understanding of adolescents and work in partnership with them and their parents.

Fresh from primary school, Wadhurst students enjoy increased freedom and personal responsibility but this is balanced with appropriate supervision in a caring and structured environment. With only two year levels and a total of 12 forms, there is a great opportunity to foster each boy's learning style.

School life is organised around three Houses - Cain, Caffin and Cuming - which are small, interactive communities. The Head of each House and a team of tutors are mentors responsible for pastoral care of boys. These small groups allow tutors to monitor individual academic, social and emotional progress. Students have a sense of belonging and working in a group where they are valued.

Educating adolescent boys is very much based on the quality of the relationships between peers, teachers and parents. Wadhurst is intimate and responsive, a place where students' needs can be sensitively met. Parents are encouraged to maintain regular contact with the School. Staff get to know the boys and their families well and establish the vital working partnership between home and school.
