Melbourne Grammar prevails over Scotch College in historic match at the MCG

One hundred and fifty years and one day after the first match of Australian Rules Football was played between Melbourne Grammar School and Scotch College, the two schools met again on the hallowed turf of the MCG to vie for the Cordner-Eggleston Cup.

Both sides felt the history and occasion behind the match – their heritage guernseys and the enormity of the famous arena heightening the footballers’ excitement.  The pressure was on to play their best, especially for Melbourne Grammar, for whom a win would mean taking out the Associated Public Schools Premiership.

“We didn’t start well – in fact the boys looked very nervous – but in the second half they settled and played inspiring football,” said MGS’s Michael Ford. “In the last five minutes of the game, the atmosphere was exhilarating, because we knew that we were headed towards a massive win. I’m very proud of the way the boys have played all year.”

Melbourne Grammar came from behind to snatch a 10-point victory from Scotch College; the final score was Melbourne Grammar 10.12 (72) to Scotch College 9.8 (62).

A fitting triumph to celebrate Melbourne Grammar School’s 150th year.
